Hugh Francis Kabat is the eldest of three children of Noreen and Frank Kabat. He was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin but the family moved to Adrian, Michigan and then Ann Arbor, the town where Hugh grew up. It is no surprise then that Hugh chose to attend the University of Michigan. As a teenager, Hugh worked at the University Hospital in the cafeteria and later in the pharmacy. When it came time to choose a major to study, his father suggested pharmacy after Hugh had decided that medicine was not for him. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a BS Pharmacy degree, Hugh was admitted and registered for classes in the MBA program with a career in the industry in mind. But, at the eleventh hour there was a dropout in the MS Hospital Pharmacy program which he chose to enter. His mentor was in that program was Don Francke. Concurrently completing the MS degree, Hugh did a residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals. His affection for his alma mater of some 30 years ago and the Wolverines of Michigan still remains and is evident if you ever had the opportunity to visit his faculty office in Minnesota in the 60s, 70s or early 80s or in the 80s and 90s at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy in Albuquerque.
